Creating Structure and Accountability in Coursework Management - A Case Study with ENLUTC

case study

At Engineering North Lincolnshire UTC, delivering a project-based engineering curriculum means students are constantly developing, refining and iterating their work over time.

To support this, the college needed more than a simple assignment submission tool. It required a structured, consistent digital environment where student work could evolve, feedback could be centralised, and staff could maintain oversight without adding administrative burden.

Working with Cloud Design Box, ENLUTC introduced Student Work Folders within Microsoft Teams, transforming how coursework is managed across the college.

“Introducing Cloud Design Box Student Work folders at ENLUTC has been a game-changer for both staff and students.”

The Challenge: Managing Long-Term Student Work at Scale

ENLUTC’s curriculum places a strong emphasis on extended projects and coursework portfolios. While Microsoft Teams Assignments provided structure for individual tasks, it did not fully support the ongoing, iterative nature of engineering work.

Staff faced several challenges:

  • No consistent space for long-term student work
  • Time spent chasing submissions and managing multiple file versions
  • Reliance on shared drives or links that quickly became disorganised
  • Limited visibility of student progress without manual intervention

The result was friction for both staff and students, particularly in subjects where development over time is critical.

"Students treat their work folders almost like a professional portfolio, which aligns perfectly with the industry-focused ethos of our UTC."

The Solution: Student Work Folders within Microsoft Teams

Cloud Design Box implemented Student Work Folders: automatically provisioned, secure folders for every student within their Class Teams.

These folders provide:

  • A dedicated, structured workspace for each student
  • Full teacher visibility without needing to request access
  • A central location for feedback, iteration and progress tracking
  • Seamless integration within the existing Microsoft 365 environment

This approach removes reliance on ad hoc storage and introduces a consistent framework that works across subjects and departments.

Claire explains the immediate impact: “Students have a dedicated space to store, manage, and submit their work, and they know exactly where to find teacher feedback. It’s helped instil a real sense of ownership and accountability.”

More Time for Teaching, Less Time on Administration

With folders created automatically and consistently structured, administrative overhead has been significantly reduced.

Teachers can now:

  • Monitor progress in real time
  • Provide targeted feedback directly within student work
  • Access all submissions in one place
  • Avoid chasing emails, links or missing files

“We’re no longer chasing missing work or dealing with the chaos of multiple email submissions. Everything is in one place, and that consistency across the school is making a real difference.”

This shift allows staff to focus on teaching and intervention rather than file management.

Supporting Real-World, Industry-Aligned Learning

For a UTC environment, preparing students for industry is essential. Student Work Folders mirror how work is managed in professional settings, particularly in engineering and technical fields.

Students:

  • Build structured portfolios over time
  • Collaborate in real time using familiar tools
  • Experience workflows aligned with industry practices

“Students treat their work folders almost like a professional portfolio, which aligns perfectly with the industry-focused ethos of our UTC.”

The use of Microsoft Teams also reinforces digital skills that are directly transferable to the workplace.

A More Structured, Student-Centred Approach

By introducing Student Work Folders, ENLUTC has created a more transparent and accountable learning environment.

Key outcomes include:

  • Improved organisation of student work
  • Greater student ownership and accountability
  • Enhanced visibility for teachers
  • Reduced administrative workload
  • Stronger alignment between teaching and real-world practice

“Overall, it’s supported a more efficient, transparent, and student-centred approach to teaching.”

Looking Ahead

As ENLUTC continues to develop its digital learning environment, Student Work Folders provide a scalable foundation for managing coursework across departments and year groups.

By combining structure with flexibility, the college is better equipped to support independent learning while maintaining clarity and consistency across its systems.
