Another exciting new AI tool has arrived in Microsoft Teams, and it’s going to be a great time saver for many teachers and educators – AI for assignment rubrics.
AI can now help teachers create and fill out rubrics for Teams Assignments, which is often a time-consuming task. But, with a helping hand from AI, you can now spend less time filling out rubrics and more time to focus on supporting your students’ learning.
In this guide, we’re taking a closer look at how you can use AI to create Assignment Rubrics.
How to create an assignment rubric with AI
Accessing AI in Rubrics is simple. You can create and add a rubric to your Assignment in Teams by creating an Assignment as you usually would.

Once you’ve added attachments, reading materials, resources and assignment instructions (you can also get help from AI on your assignment instructions, don’t forget), you can add a rubric.
- Select Add rubric.
- A window will appear where you’re able to:
- Reuse a Rubric
- Upload an existing Rubric
- Create a new Rubric
- Create a Rubric using AI
- Tap Create Rubric using AI.
- Add a title and select your language.
- Fill out some basic instructions on what you wish the rubric to evaluate. For example, your expectations for the assignment.

- Tap Next.
- Select Grade level.
- Set Rubric scale. For example, “Excellent, Good, Fair and Poor”.
- Enter your Rubric criteria. For example, “thorough reading”, “detailed responses” or “critical thinking”.
- Hit Create Rubric using AI to generate your rubric.
In just a few moments, your rubric will appear on the screen, and you’ll see your marking criteria in the rubric table.

From here, you can add more criteria and change the grade, the language and the wording.
Tip: Tap Modify rubric using AI and choose to Expand or make the text Concise.
When you’re happy with your rubric, you can select Attach, which will attach it to the assignment and be ready for you to send out to your students.
