Get organised and save your future self a lot of time by archiving and restoring Microsoft Teams channels as and when you need them.
Archiving Teams channels gives you the flexibility to declutter your channel list while allowing you to keep a record of past projects and events that you can restore and reuse at any time.
In this guide, Keith talks about how you can easily archive a channel in Microsoft Teams and restore an archived Teams channel at a later date.
Why we love archiving and restoring Microsoft Teams
Organisation – you can archive channels to keep your active channels tidy while preserving important project history.
Repurposing – you can save time setting up new channels for similar events/projects. Keith demonstrates this with a Team Building event channel in the video.
How to archive a Microsoft Teams channel
- Go to Microsoft Teams and navigate to the channel you wish to archive.
- Tap the three dots (…) next to the channel name to open More options.
- Select Archive channel.

- A pop-up will appear asking you to confirm the Archive.
- You also have the option to check the box that will “Make the SharePoint folders read-only for team members.

- Select Archive to confirm.
Your channel will appear under Hidden channels in Teams. You won’t be able to post any more messages, but you can access the posts. If you checked “Make the SharePoint folders read-only for team members”, members will be able to access the folders but not edit them.

How to restore an Archived Channel in Microsoft Teams
Restoring an archived channel is great if you need to reuse the content from a previous channel. For example, an event or project.
- Go to Teams and navigate to Hidden channels. It should be at the bottom of the left-hand panel, underneath Main Channels.
- Hover over the name of the archived channel you wish to restore.
- Tap the three dots (…) and select Restore channel.

- This will automatically restore the channel and it will appear in your Main Channels list. Members will be able to post and access/edit the files and folders.
Tips for archiving and restoring Microsoft Teams channels
Stay organised
Archive any channels that you no longer need to keep your channel list looking tidy and easy to access.
Consider permissions
When restoring a channel, make sure you review the channel members to make sure everyone has the right level of permissions and access.
Avoid channel deletion
Archiving a channel allows you to keep a full record of channel messages and files, which can be important for tracking project and event history.
