About quizzes in Microsoft Teams
Teachers can make interactive quizzes in Teams, using multiple choice questions, short text answers or long-form answers that require students to write a paragraph or more for their answer. You can also ask students to reflect on their learning with the Rating and Linkert scales.
What’s more, quizzes can be configured so that they’re self-marking, giving students instant feedback on their answers and highlighting any areas they may need to revise.
How to set up quizzes in Microsoft Teams assignments
It’s really easy to set up quiz-based assignments in Teams.
- Head to the class you want to set the quiz for and go to Assignments.
- Select Create and New quiz.
- Tap Add quiz to create a brand new quiz.
💡 Tip
You can recycle or repurpose an existing quiz by tapping My Quizzes. Select the quiz you want to reuse and hit Attach.
How to create a new quiz in Microsoft Teams assignments
Once you have hit Add quiz, you can begin to build your new quiz in Microsoft Forms.
- Add a Title and Description for your quiz
- You can also background image by uploading your own, selecting an image from OneDrive or searching for an image online.

Hit Preview at any time to see what the quiz will look like for your students on both mobile and desktop.
3. Select Add New to add questions to your quiz.
Question types in assignments
| Choice | A multiple-choice question where students select one or more answers from a list of options you provide. Useful for quizzes with specific answer choices. |
| Text | Students can type a short or long written response. Ideal for open-ended questions or short-answer responses. |
| Rating | Students can rate something on a scale, such as stars or numbers. Useful for feedback or assessing opinions. |
| Date | Students can select a specific date from a calendar. Useful for questions that require a date-based response, like “When did the event happen?” |
| Ranking | Students can order a list of items based on a specific criterion, such as importance or preference. Useful for assessing prioritisation or understanding sequences. |
| Linkert | Presents a scale for students to indicate their level of agreement or satisfaction. Useful for surveys or gauging opinions. |
| Upload File | Students can submit a file (e.g., document, image, video) as their response. Useful for assignments that require more detailed submissions or visual evidence. |
| Net Promoter Score | Measure something on a scale of 0 to 10. Useful for gauging comprehension of a topic. |
5. You can choose to further customise each question by allocating points, allowing for multiple answers and marking a question as Required.
💡 Tip
For some types of questions, such as multiple choice and short answer, you can select which answer is correct to give students automatic feedback/results on their quizzes.
How to change the style of your quizzes in Microsoft Teams
You can customise how your quizzes look and feel.
- Tap Style.
- From here, you can change the colour and background image of your quiz.
How to send your quiz to students
It’s easy to send your quiz to students via Teams Assignments.
- When you’re happy with your quiz, hit Done. This takes you back to the assignment you created earlier.
- From here, you can continue to setting your assignment as you usually would; setting the Title, Instructions and more.
3. Hit Assign to submit your quiz-based assignment to students.

💡 Tip
You can set a timer for quiz-based assignments. When a student opens a quiz, the clock will start ticking, even if the student exits the quiz to carry out research. This is useful if you want to give students the experience of exam conditions.
