How to mute students in Microsoft Teams

Muting students in Microsoft Class Teams is useful if you’ve got a student making inappropriate comments or distracting the class. In this guide, we show you how to manage student comments, mute individual students and mute the entire class in Microsoft Teams.  

There are a few reasons why teachers may wish to delete student comments or mute them all together in Microsoft Teams: 

  • Removing inappropriate or off-topic discussions.  
  • Reducing distracting messages that disrupt the lesson or class discussion. 
  • Reinforcing respectful communication.    
  • Addressing privacy or safeguarding concerns.  
  • Enforcing of school policies regarding online communication.  

Below, we explore how to:  

  1. Delete comments and messages in Microsoft Class Teams 
  2. Mute your entire class in Microsoft Class Teams 
  3. Mute individual students in Microsoft Class Teams

How to delete comments and messages in Microsoft Class Teams  

  1. Hover over the comment/message you wish to delete from Teams.  
  1. Hit the three dots. 
  1. Select Delete. 

Note: If you accidentally delete a comment/message, you have a few minutes to tap Undo to restore it.  

How to mute your entire class in Microsoft Class Teams 

  1. Head to the Class Team you wish to mute.  
  1. Tap the three dots on the left-hand side panel.  
  1. Select Manage team. This automatically takes you to the Members tab. 
  1. Navigate to Members and guests (you may have to expand this section).  
  1. Check the Mute students checkbox to mute all students in the team.  

How to mute individual students in Microsoft Class Teams 

  1. Head to the Class Team you wish to mute.  
  1. Tap the three dots on the left-hand side panel.  
  1. Select Manage team. This automatically takes you to the Members tab. 
  1. Navigate to Members and guests (you may have to expand this section).  
  1. Check the Mute students checkbox next to the individual students you wish to mute in this Class Team.  

Muted students will see “Replies are disabled” on any messages in Teams and will not be able to start new conversations within that Class Team.  

Note: Muted students are only muted in the selected class, not across the whole of Microsoft Teams.  

How to unmute students in Microsoft Class Teams 

  1. Head to the Class Team you wish to mute.  
  1. Tap the three dots on the left-hand side panel.  
  1. Select Manage team. This automatically takes you to the Members tab. 
  1. Navigate to Members and guests (you may have to expand this section).  
  1. Uncheck the Mute students checkbox next to the students you wish to mute in this Class Team. You can unmute all students by unchecking the top checkbox.
