You must activate any new class teams in Microsoft Teams in order to use them. In this guide, we show you how to activate a new class team.
Microsoft released a new Microsoft Teams for Education in late 2023. This has resulted in things looking a little bit different for schools managing their classes and teams.
When you create a new class team, it isn’t automatically activated, which prevents students from joining class teams that aren’t quite ready yet.
Once you’ve uploaded all your class resources, notebooks and set up your new class team, you have the option to activate it.

How to activate a Class Team in the new Microsoft Teams for Education
- Head to the Teams tab in Microsoft Teams.
- Tap the three dots (…) and select Manage Teams. Here you will see all your classes and teams.
Any inactive teams have a purple padlock:
- Tap the three dots (…) on any inactive team to open More options.
- Select Activate Team. This does not activate the team immediately.
- Tap the class team to open it up. From here, you can add class resources and class notebooks.
- When you’re ready to allow your students into the class team select Activate.
