Time is your most limited resource. Between planning, teaching, marking and everything else squeezed into a school day, anything that helps lighten the workload is a welcome relief.
Microsoft has released a brand-new, free AI feature for all teachers – Teach Copilot.
And it can dramatically speed up the marking process in Microsoft Teams.
If you’re already using Assignments and rubrics, this tool can help you generate high-quality, personalised feedback in seconds, without losing your professional judgement or that personal touch your pupils rely on.
In this guide, we break down how the feature works, how you can use it even without a rubric, and how it supports schools’ wider goals around consistency, quality and effective feedback.
Using AI to add feedback in Microsoft Teams assignments
When a student submits work through Microsoft Teams Assignments, teachers can now use a new tool to automatically summarise the rubric as personalised feedback.
Note: To add feedback to a Microsoft Teams assignment with AI, you’ll need to create a rubric when setting the assignment. You can generate a rubric with Teach Copilot here.
Here’s how it works:
- In Microsoft Teams, go to your Class Team and then Assignments.
- Select an assignment you’ve already set and go to the Returned tab.
- Open the student’s work.
- Open the rubric and select the level the student is at for each criteria.
- Tap Summarise the rubric as feedback.
This generates feedback based on:
- What the student has written
- The rubric criteria
- The level you selected
You can always make manual changes to this before submitting it back to the student.
Using Copilot to enhance feedback (without rubrics)
If you haven’t used a rubric, there’s still an option to use the AI tool to support your feedback and marking process.
- In Microsoft Teams, go to your Class Team and then Assignments.
- Select an assignment you’ve already set and go to the Returned tab.
- Open the student’s work.
- Leave feedback as you would normally.
- Tap Enhance feedback and Copilot will tidy up the feedback – for example, make it more accessible or the wording simpler.
- You can always make manual changes to this before submitting it back to the student.
Why try Teach Copilot for assignment feedback
Teach Copilot is not designed to replace teacher expertise.
Instead, it gives you a strong starting point, saves time and helps you deliver consistent, rubric-aligned feedback.
Here’s why it’s worth giving it a go in your next Teams assignment:
- It’s completely free for all teachers.
- Works with rubrics and manually written feedback.
- Helps you maintain consistent, high-quality marking.
- Supports pupil understanding with simplified language options.
- Saves significant time during heavy marking periods.
