How to grade group assignments in Class Teams

Grading group assignments can often feel like a challenge – how do you make sure that every student has contributed equally, give fair marks and keep the process simple?

Microsoft Teams allows you to easily set group assignments and give grades and feedback to the entire group and individually.

For teachers, this takes the hassle out of collecting, reviewing, and grading work, giving you a clear view of who’s contributed what and making feedback easy. Meanwhile, for school leaders, it ensures consistency across classrooms, providing valuable insights into student progress.

By using Class Teams, schools can save time, reduce workload, and create a fairer, more transparent way of grading, benefiting both staff and students.

How to turn in Group Assignments in Class Teams (Student View)

Any student from within the group can turn in the assignment.

When the group is ready to submit, open up the Assignment in Teams.

  1. Hit Turn in for group to submit it.

Tip: If a student submits the assignment by mistake, or wants to add more information, they can tap Undo turn in for group. Don’t forget to turn it in again, after you’ve made the changes.

How to grade group assignments in Class Teams

  1. Go to Assignments.
  2. From here, you’re able to view Forthcoming, Ready to grade, Past due, Returned and Draft assignments.
  3. Choose the group assignment you wish to grade.

4. Select Handed-in to open up that group’s submission and grade it.

5. On the right-hand side of the assignment, there’s a speed grader that allows you to easily grade the work.

6. From here, you can add Group feedback and assign Group points.

7. If you attached a rubric to the assignment, you can open it up and grade the work using the rubric criteria. As you select the criteria, Teams automatically adds up the points for the final grade.

8. When you’re happy with the feedback and grades, you can hit Return. Returning an assignment sends the group the feedback and grades and places the group

9. Alternatively, if you want your group of students to do additional work on the assignment, hit Return for revision.


How to grade students individually for group assignments in Class Teams

Sometimes, you may with to grade students individually for their efforts in group assignments.

  1. Go to Assignments and choose the group assignment you wish to grade.
  2. Tap the three dots (…) next to the group and choose Grade students individually.
  3. Alternatively, you can grade as a group (see above) and choose to Grade students individually.
