How to set Group Assignments in Microsoft Class Teams

Group assignments allow students to develop key collaboration skills and critical thinking. With Teams, Teachers can manage projects easily, encouraging students to work together on projects and enhance their learning.

In this guide, we show you how to create engaging group assignments for your class in a few easy steps.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Create a new group assignment
  • Create student groups automatically and manually
  • Set assignments for groups of students

How to create a group assignment in Teams

  1. Head to the class in Teams who you wish to set a group assignment for.
  2. Go to Assignments.
  3. Hit Create and select Assignment to open a new assignment in Teams.
  4. From here, you can give the assignment a Title, Instructions and attach and Resources.

How to enable group assignment settings in Class Teams

When you’ve completed your assignment setup, it’s time to set it as a group assignment.

Scroll to Assign to and toggle Group Assignment to enable group collaboration.

At this stage, you can decide how students will be grouped:

  • Manually Group Students: Create custom groups by selecting specific students.
  • Automatically Group Students: Let Teams assign students to groups randomly based on your chosen criteria.

How to set group assignment details and rubrics

You can define key details, such as due dates, points and grading and categories. Optionally, you can add rubrics to assignments to provide criteria for grading, making expectations clear for students.   • Due Date: Specify a deadline to keep everyone on track.
  • Points: Include a grading system if applicable.
  • Rubric: Attach an assessment rubric to standardise feedback and grading.

Tip: Encourage collaboration amongst students – they can use the Files and Posts tabs in their group channels to share ideas and work together.

Assign your group assignment in Class Teams

Once you have reviewed all the details, click Assign to send the group assignment to your students. To monitor progress, use the Grades tab in Teams to see how each group performs and provide feedback as needed.
