New addition to Immersive Reader – Reading Coach

Reading Coach in Immersive Reader allows students to practice their reading skills independently, practice words and improve accuracy. In this guide, we take a closer look at the tool and how you can activate it for your Class Teams.

Immersive Reader is already a powerful accesibility tool in Microsoft, designed to support students and individuals with various learning needs. It is integrated into several Microsoft apps, such as Word, OneNote, Outlook, Teams, and more. 

Some of the key features of Immersive Reader include:  

Text-to-Speech

Listen to the text read aloud, aiding comprehension and understanding.

Adjustable Text Settings

Customise text settings such as font size, font style, spacing, and background colour to suit your preferences and visual needs.

Focus Mode

Highlights lines or individual words as they are being read aloud. This feature helps students maintain focus and track their reading progress, reducing distractions and improving concentration.

Grammar and Syllabification tools

Breaks down words into syllables and highlight parts of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc.).

Picture Dictionary

By clicking on individual words, students can access a picture dictionary that provides visual representations of the word’s meaning.

Supports multilingual students and those learning a second language by providing access to content in their preferred language.

Reading Progress Tracking

Provides reading reports that track students’ reading accuracy, reading time, correct words per minute, and words to practice. This feedback helps students monitor their progress and identify areas for improvement. 

How to activate Reading Coach in Immersive Reader

  1. Open the document you wish to read with Immersive Reader.  
  1. Tap View > Immersive Reader.  
  1. Go to the top right-hand-side of Immersive Reader and hit the book icon (Reading Preferences).  
  1. Toggle on Reading Coach. The play button at the bottom of your screen should change to a microphone.

How to use Reading Coach in Immersive Reader 

  1. Activate Reading Coach in Immersive Reader (see above). 
  1. Hit the microphone to begin and select Start reading. 
  1. Start reading the passage aloud.  
  1. Tap Stop reading.  

Reading Coach will provide you with a personalised reading report, including: 

  • Accuracy 
  • Time spent reading 
  • Correct words per minute 
  • Words to practice

5. Hit Practice words to open Reading Coach and start practicing.  

How to practice words in Reading Coach

Reading Coach provides you with a personalised reading report, listing the words you need to practice.

  1. Select one of your practice words.  
  1. When you’re ready, select the microphone and read the word out loud.  
  1. Hit the Speaker button to get Reading Coach to say the word back to you.  
  1. Tap the two arrows to Stretch the word and speak it slower  
  1. Select the picture for Picture dictionary.

If you say the word correctly, it’ll be highlighted in green.
