Microsoft Reflect offers teachers the perfect way to receive feedback from students about how they’re feeling. But did you know you can add a Reflect Check-in to specific assignments?
Reflect Check-ins in Microsoft bring a number of benefits to the classroom:
- Allow students space to reflect on how they’re feeling
- Enable teachers to check student wellbeing
- Help teachers identify students who may be struggling
- Support teachers in seeing student comprehension and which topics may need a re-visit
Feelings Monsters in Microsoft Reflect
These fun creatures allow students to express their thoughts and feelings back to teachers in an engaging way. With five different monsters to choose from and 60 emotions to express, students can enjoy a simple and interactive way of communicating their thoughts and feelings about their learning.
Here’s how you can add a Reflect Check-in to any assignment in Microsoft Teams:

What students see – Reflect Check-in
Now, let’s check out this feature from the student’s point of view.
Once a student has completed their assignment and hits Hand in, the Reflect Check-in will appear.
Students can select from one of five Emojis.
They can check who will see their response by tapping the Eye icon.
When they’re happy with their choice, they can tap Next.

Students will then be asked for more information about their initial response.
Hovering over each word will show a Feelings Monster and give a little more detail on what that emotion/feeling means.

When they’re happy with their choice, they can tap Submit.
Students can change their Reflect response by undoing their Assignment hand-in and resubmitting it in the same way.
View student Reflect Check-in responses
Teachers can view student responses to Reflect Check-ins when students have handed back their assignments.
- Head over to the Assignment page and tap the assignment you want to view.
There are three ways you can view student responses:
Reflect together mode
A window shows all the Reflect Check-ins together, with a Feelings Monster representing each student response. You can hover over the monster to get more detailed information. There’s also an option to hide the names in the top right-hand corner.

View individual students
Go into each student assignment as you typically would to grade the assignment and see the student’s Reflect Check-in response. From here, you can also see the student’s history of responses by tapping View trend.

Reflect area in Teams
Gives you an overview of the students’ responses. This is great for gauging how your class are feeling overall and can help you identify common issues in the classroom.
