Brand new: Assignment Analytics for Teams

Courtney

Cloud Design Box Assignment Analytics gives schools valuable insight into how homework is being set, engaged with and completed.

A common challenge in schools and Multi Academy Trusts (MATs) is keeping track of student assignments:

  • How much homework is being set?
  • How many assignments are being handed in on time?
  • Which students need extra support?
  • Is every department setting a fair amount of work?
  • Is every year group or class being set a consistent amount of homework?

We’ve been supporting schools and trusts for over a decade to turn Microsoft 365 into a powerful learning environment.

And from speaking with many of the 800+ schools we support, we know that school leaders are finding it increasingly difficult and time consuming to get accurate, easy-to-digest data about assignments and homework.

There appears to be a real lack of consistency across schools when it comes to the volume of work, how its delivered and how much of it is being completed by students.

This inconsistency opens up a number of problems:

  • Students who are struggling to engage with homework can easily slip through the cracks.
  • Teachers who need extra support in setting assignments can be overlooked.
  • Already-overwhelmed SLT are spending more time trying to find information about homework rather than supporting their staff and students.

That’s why we’re launching our brand new Assignment Analytics as part of the Cloud Design Box Standard and Excellence packages.

A dashboard giving school leaders the power to get a quick overview into assignment data across the school, as well as the ability to gain more in-depth insights into subjects, departments, year groups and even individual students and teachers.

Below, we show you how Assignment Analytics works and the benefits it’s already bringing to SLT at a number of schools.

Why schools love Assignment Analytics

We’ve already trialled Assignment Analytics with a number of schools and they have highlighted that it’s enabled them to spot patterns in homework setting and student engagement, offer tailored support to teachers and students, hold teams to account with confidence and overall reduce SLT workload.

Spot patterns in assignments

By consolidating all assignment information into one easy-to-use dashboard, SLT can filter by subject, class, teacher and student and pick up on common themes and patterns in the data.

“From a head of department point of view, that ability to have a very quick look to see what teachers in their department haven’t set work or have set work for their classes,” explains Rosalyn Chalk, Assistant Principal at Ark Boulton Academy.

“I’m able to identify which classes have got work set and deal with any gaps, as well as compare data from one term to another.”

Provide tailored support

The ability to spot patterns in both teacher and student engagement in assignments has enabled school leaders to provide more tailored support.

“We’re able to track high-level completion rates for the students and spot where students aren’t engaging with the Teams platforms,” Rosalyn continues.

“Then we’re able to speak with our pastoral team and get the intervention put in place for those students individually.”

Hold teams to account

It’s easier to hold teachers and teams accountable for how much homework they’re setting their students.

“We’ve been able to track that homework much more successfully and see it on a subject-by-subject and a teacher-by-teacher basis,” Rosalyn enthuses.

“Our heads of departments have been able to identify where staff may have been struggling or unsure about the process and offer support where needed.”

Reduce SLT workload

Instead of checking manually across multiple platforms, SLT can now access one dashboard to get the information they need instantly. This allows them to spend more time supporting their staff and students with the information they need in-hand.

“It’s really helped reduce teacher workload because we’re not collating information from multiple sources – we’re not having to go to 7 or 8 different members of staff and then sit and fill in Excel spreadsheets,” she adds.

“Thanks to Cloud Design Box, we’ve been able to have a much more focused intervention process, and it’s given us a greater level of depth of leadership oversight.”

It’s clear that our new Assignment Analytics tool has had an incredible impact already at Ark Boulton Academy.

How Assignment Analytics works in Cloud Design Box

Cloud Design Box Assignment Analytics unifies all the data from Microsoft Teams Assignments, giving SLT both a bird’s eye view and a more in-depth look at assignments being set across the school.

There are two main parts of the dashboard:

  • Assignment data: Focuses on assignments set by teachers.
  • Submission data: Focuses on student assignment engagement.

In Assignment Analytics you can view:

View how many assignments have been set across the academic year

The Assignment Data: Overview provides a visual overview of:

  • Active assignments
  • Total assignments set
  • Classes with assignments
  • Average assignments per class
  • Subjects with active assignments
  • Number of assignments created per week/month

This can be filtered by Academic Year or a specific date range such as “Last 90 Days”

View how many assignments are being set per teacher

The Assignment Data: Teacher dashboard provides data on how teachers are setting assignments for their classes including:

  • Total assignments set.
  • Percentage of teachers who have set assignments.
  • Percentage of teachers setting assignments for all their classes.

This can be filtered by academic year or a specific date range such as “Last 90 Days”.

You also get a list of all the teachers in the organisation, which can be filtered by subject. This shows you how individual teachers are setting assignments. For example, total percentage of classes with assignments set and number of assignments set by the teacher.

View student assignment submission data

The Submission Data: Students dashboard provides data on how students are engaging and completing the homework being set, including:

  • Total number of student submissions.
  • Percentage of students completing assignments.
  • Percentage of students completing assignments on time.

You also get a list of all the students in the school, which you can filter to search for specific individuals.

This shows you how each student is engaging with homework, including:

  • Assignments received.
  • Assignments not completed.
  • Assignments handed in late.
  • Assignments handed in on time.

View year group assignment submission data

The Submission Data: Year Groups dashboard provides an overview of the percentage of year groups with assignments set and whether they’ve been submitted on time, late or not completed.

View subject assignment submission data

The Submission Data: Subjects dashboard provides an overview of assignments and submissions per subject, including:

  • Number of subjects with assignments set.
  • Percentage of subjects that have set assignments.
  • Percentage of subjects with assignments set for all their classes.

There is also a list view where you can view more information about subject assignments, such as:

  • Percentage of classes within a subject that have assignments.
  • Number of assignments received.
  • Assignments not completed (not submitted within two weeks after the due date).
  • Assignments handed in late (submitted within two weeks after the due date).
  • Assignments handed in on time (submitted before the due date).

View class assignment submission data

Via the Submission Data: Subjects dashboard, you can select on each subject to drill down further into each class.

This shows:

  • Number of classes within the subject.
  • Number of classes that have set assignments.
  • Assignments not completed (not submitted within two weeks after the due date).
  • Assignments handed in late (submitted within two weeks after the due date).
  • Assignments handed in on time (submitted before the due date).

View class assignment list

Via the Submission Data: Subjects dashboard, you can tap on each subject to drill down further into each class and then into individual classes to see an assignment list.

The Assignments list shows:

  • How many assignments have been set for this class.
  • Percentage of students completing assignments.
  • Percentage of students completing assignments on time.
  • Assignment name.
  • Status (i.e. assigned or draft).
  • Created date.
  • Due date.

From here, you can select Students to see assignment progress per student for that specific class.

This shows how many assignments your selected student has:

  • Received for this class.
  • Not completed for this class.
  • Handed in late for this class.
  • Handed in on time for this class.
